Douglas Tieman

Mr. Tieman has been the President and CEO of Caron Treatment Centers since 1995. Under Mr. Tieman's direction, Caron provides an extensive continuum of care for teens, young adults, adults, older adults and families at its facilities in Pennsylvania and Florida and its Regional Recovery Centers in Atlanta, Ga., Philadelphia, Pa., New York, Boston, Mass., and Washington, DC. Also under Mr. Tieman, Caron has taken leadership roles in sponsoring research in addiction treatments and outcomes, advocating for ethics and standards and participating in national conferences on addiction and recovery. Since Mr. Tieman joined Caron, its revenue has grown ten-fold, making it one of the largest nonprofit residential addiction treatment centers in the nation. Mr. Tieman is also an author, publishing several industry-related articles and the book Flying Over the Pigpen: Tried and True Leadership Lessons from Growing Up on a Farm.

Laurie Reid

Ms. Reid has over 20 years of experience serving individuals, families and communities in the behavioral healthcare field. After her naval military service, Laurie earned a B.S. degree with a major in Sociology from Wichita State University, and an M.S. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Friends University. In addition, she is a Master Certified Addictions Professional, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Florida and Georgia, Life Coach and Certified Recovery Educator from the Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery.

Laurie enjoys assisting administrative and clinical teams achieve high reliability within substance abuse and mental health treatment centers. She is an expert in quality assurance, clinical processes, as well as accreditation gap analysis for standard compliance and often provide consultation to agencies needing consultation to maintain accreditation compliance with The Joint Commission.

Kathy Moser

Kathy Moser is the founder of Music for Recovery and has brought hundreds of songwriting workshops and concerts into treatment centers across the US since 2009. An award-winning songwriter and performer in long-term recovery, she is dedicated to making music programming as much a part of treatment as yoga and equine therapy. The 350+ songs written in her workshops have been streamed over 20,000 times, providing a powerful and engaging form of aftercare.

In 2015, Moser also became the music program director at Daytop NJ, where she expanded the program and helped Daytop win an award of excellence in addiction treatment from the NJ Mental Health Association. The Music for Recovery program has since been adopted by Carrier Clinic, Daytop Pittsgrove and Summit Oaks Hospital as well.

Romie MushtaqMD

Dr. Romie Mushtaq, MD is a traditionally trained neurologist with additional board certification in Integrative Medicine. She completed her medical training at the Medical University of South Carolina, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and University of Michigan. After suffering from career burnout and undergoing life-saving surgery, she traveled around the world learning mindfulness-based techniques, and she now helps individuals achieve brain and mental health holistically at the Center for Natural and Integrative Medicine in Orlando, Florida.

Dr. Romie combines her unique expertise in neuroscience & mindfulness as a highly sought-after speaker to teach stress management and mindful leadership to Fortune 500 companies, universities and groups around the country. Dr. Romie's expertise has been featured on TED talks, Fox News, NBC, NPR, The Huffington Post, and dozens of other national media outlets. She is currently writing her first book on bringing Western Medicine & Eastern Wisdom together for a "Busy Brain Cure."

Dawn NickelPhD

Dawn Nickel is an accomplished and versatile leader and the creator of She Recovers, currently the largest online platform dedicated to supporting women in recovery from addiction and related life challenges. Dawn started her journey of recovery from drug addiction in 1987. She is a strong advocate for the view that every woman in or seeking recovery must be supported to find the tools and pathways that will work best for her as an individual.

Today, in addition to operating her health and social policy research consultancy, Dawn is determined to grow She Recovers and its offerings so that more women (and more women from diverse backgrounds) have the access, resources, support and freedoms necessary to cultivate individualized and holistic pathways in order to find health, sustain long-term recovery, achieve their potential, and help other women to do the same.

Alan S. Johnson

Alan S. Johnson currently serves as Chief Assistant State Attorney for the 15th Judicial Circuit, a position he previously held from 2005 – 2009. He returned to the State Attorney’s Office in 2013 after serving three years as Executive Director of the newly established Palm Beach County Commission on Ethics. In 2016, Mr. Johnson was asked to lead the State Attorney’s Sober Homes Task Force, established by the Florida Legislature, to conduct a study aimed to strengthen investigation and prosecution of criminal and regulatory violations within the substance abuse treatment industry. In 2017, the Task Force recommended significant legislative changes in the areas of marketing, patient brokering and treatment industry standards. These initiatives passed unanimously and were adopted into law on July 1, 2017. In its first 18 months of operation, the law enforcement side of the Task Force investigated and charged 48 individuals for violating fraud and patient brokering laws.

Chris Christie

The Governor is a former United States Attorney and he served as the 55th Governor of New Jersey from 2010 to 2018. During his governorship, he was appointed by President Trump to Chair the Presidential Commission on the Opioid epidemic and Drug Abuse. Christie became an ABC News contributor in 2018 after leaving office and joined Beach House Center for Recovery as Executive Chairman.

After graduating in 1984 from the University of Delaware, he earned a J.D. at Seton Hall. He practiced law from 1987 to 2002. In 2000, he served as New Jersey Campaign Counsel to the George W. Bush For President campaign. President Bush appointed him U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, a position he held from 2002 to 2008. Christie won the 2009 race for Governor of New Jersey, defeating Democratic Governor Jon Corzine. He was re-elected in 2013, receiving 61% of the vote.

The opiate epidemic and the emergence of mental health disorders have helped create a need for treatment never felt before in society to this degree. Many times, the need for change is not felt or acted upon by the intended patient. In this session, our panel of experts will examine best practices and difficulties when dealing with unwilling patients, individuals suffering from mental health disorders and their families or support systems.

R. Jeffrey JayB.S., C.A.P., C.I.P.

Jeff Jay, BSc, CIP, is a clinical interventionist and addiction specialist. He has been guiding families into recovery for more than 30 years. His work has appeared on CNN, the Jane Pauley Show, PBS, Forbes Online and many professional journals. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, a certified addictions professional (CAP) and a certified intervention professional (CIP).

Jay is the co-author of the best-selling book Love First: A Family’s Guide to Intervention with his wife Debra. His latest book from Hazelden is Navigating Grace, a solo voyage of survival and redemption. Jay also heads a national private practice that provides intervention and recovery mentoring services. His personal recovery dates from October 4, 1981.
